Help create affordable housing for the homeless by contributing to our homeless tiny house communities.
Frequently Asked Questions
We want to give back to this group of Chicagoans who statistically are 50% more likely to become homeless than other Americans. This is often due to trauma, disabilities, lack of support networks, and a lack of housing options. CTH founder Brien Cron is himself a Navy veteran with a true compassion for his fellow vets. There is a critical shortage of both affordable housing, especially for the homeless. Tiny houses can be built relatively easily making use of private and public efforts and funds. They offer a housing solution with a smaller environmental footprint, a better use of resources, and a more dignified path out of homelessness.
Our first program will be for homeless veterans, followed by other populations of homeless residents of Chicago. We have future aspirations to bring tiny houses to the affordable rental and ownership markets.
We welcome all who want to make this vision a reality. We have particular needs for volunteers with professional experience in construction, public relations, social service, outreach to veterans, architectural design, social media, business administration, and fundraising. We are an all-volunteer registered non-profit.
At this time, existing zoning laws would have to be changed to permit citizens to build tiny houses within the city limits. However the city has allowed CTH to go forward with its pilot tiny house project. Our hope is the city and communities will see the value of our tiny house solutions and accelerate changes in the current zoning laws. We are blazing a path for tiny houses In Chicago. This is truly a historic build for the city of Chicago and CTH.
While there is no official definition of a tiny house, it is generally thought of as a small house, typically sized under 700 square feet. While they can be built on foundations, most tiny homes are built on trailers. Our current designs come in around 300 sq./ft They represent a new concept in affordable housing by making efficient use of interior space and available land.
Tiny house developments are based around a shared identity (i.e.veterans). They will make it easier for its residents to receive available supportive services and to connect with others in the community. They will provide “true community”, They will provide safe support group settings to its residents returning them successfully to home ownership status.
Chicago Tiny House’s mission is to create tiny house communities throughout Chicago that will provide homeless Chicagoans with safe and cost-effective housing, with integrated supportive services. We accomplish this by coordinating concerned individuals, local neighborhood groups, builders, support services, and funding sources to meet the affordable housing challenge in the smartest way possible.
- 1 Year goal: Complete Chicago’s first tiny house development which would be a community of tiny houses for homeless Veterans with supportive services.
- 3 Year Goal: To replicate such tiny house communities for other homeless populations.
- 5 Year goal: Create a tiny house ownership program for eligible graduates of the community programs.
